The first written mention of the settlement, now called Tsaritsani, is the bull of the Monastery of Panagia Olimpiotissa dating back to the year 1296, for Emperor Andronicus II Komnenos. The town flourished during the Ottoman period, counting the 18th century population of ten thousand inhabitants. It was, rather unfairly, as one of the most prosperous cities of the enslaved Greeks.
